A Nurse’s Journey into Medical Writing

A perspective on my experience, education, and work values.

After 30 years as a nurse, one thing has never changed—my drive to improve patient care.

My career took me through bedside nursing, utilization management, correctional health, and management. In every role, there were challenges to accurate and relevant communications being accomplished. Great medical advancements and resources exist, but they often get lost in translation between technical and medical. In my experience this also encompassed correctional care situations. The right information, presented in the right way, makes all the difference in patient outcomes and staff safety. That’s why I’ve taken my experience and shifted gears into medical writing—to help bridge that gap.

Healthcare first caught my attention in high school, but I initially pursued a more science-driven path. However, nursing quickly pulled me in, offering the perfect mix of hands-on care and education. I earned my LPN in 1993, my ADN in 1995, and a bachelor’s in nursing and biology in 2000. Along the way, I never stopped learning, gaining certifications in medical-surgical nursing, correctional healthcare, care management, and even legal nurse consulting. Although I retired from bedside nursing in 2022, my passion for learning and improving patient
care didn’t retire with me. Now, as a medical writer, my focus is to help healthcare and device companies communicate with clarity, credibility, and impact. Whether it’s B2B content that helps decision-makers understand your product’s value or B2C messaging that connects with clinicians and patients, I focus on making complex medical information accessible and actionable. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me spending time with my husband of 38 years, my two grown sons, and my two Shiba Inu fur babies. (They keep me on my toes just as much as my nursing career did!)
